For those in their 30s and 40s, the name of Jean-François Paillard (1928-2013) hardly raises an eyebrow, but in my day, this French conductor was considered as one of the main exponents of the baroque, and his many records were as prized as any in the musical firmament of the 1960s and 70s in particular. Paillard was an unflinching devotee of J S Bach, and way back in 1954 he embarked on a project of recording the composer's main orchestral works. The Brandenburg Concertos on this re-issue are the culmination of nearly twenty years of dedication, and unstinted efforts to bring to the public Bach's masterpieces in near-perfect versions...
