We are used to Handel's oratorios full of choruses and enticing music, and none brings more to the stage than Israel in Egypt, or 'Israel in Ägypten' as it is recorded here in Mendelssohn's arrangement for Düsseldorf. Professor R Larry Todd, in his excellent notes, muses on the links between Mendelssohn and the music of Handel and Bach, and reveals the intricacies behind this Düsseldorf version which is presented here, probably for the first time.
The major change is the nine minute overture which Mendelssohn introduced, since the original oratorio lacked one...
