This disc contains not just one but four works by the octogenarian American composer Gordon Getty (born 1933). The idiom of The Little Match Girl, based closely on Hans Christian Andersen's short story, is somewhat dated in its choral writing, much of it unison, though less so in the orchestral parts. The story is told in a declamatory fashion, tender and affectionate, and the choir's diction is pleasantly clear, so that the story can be followed without undue effort.
The moods are well contrasted, and punctuating the overall declamation is a wealth of solo touches — bass clarinet, light-stepped brass and much else...
