Ensemble

An Ambiguous Ending

Stravinsky, Sibelius and Shostakovich from
Sophie Rosa and Derby Concert Orchestra,
reviewed by MIKE WHEELER

At first glance Stravinsky's Circus Polka seemed very much the odd one out in the company of Sibelius' Violin Concerto and Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, but Derby Concert Orchestra and conductor Jonathan Trout (Derby Cathedral, Derby UK, 5 March 2016) clearly had fun with it, bouncing along with the strutting rhythms and finding just the right amount of swagger in that deliciously skewed quotation from Schubert's March Militaire No 1 at the end.

After her impressive performance of the Brahms Concerto with the orchestra this time last year it was good to welcome back violinist Sophie Rosa for the Sibelius. That famously magical opening simply floated in, though it took a little while for a sense of the music's forward movement to be fully established, and once or twice, especially after the big central cadenza, momentum seemed to flag momentarily...
