Wide-ranging Character
Andrew Dunlop, Ria Nolan and the Eblana String Trio, heard by MIKE WHEELER
The Eblana String Trio, among the growing number of Derby Chamber Music regulars, was joined on this occasion by pianist Andrew Dunlop and double-bass player Ria Nolan (Multi-Faith Centre, Derby University, Derby, UK, 5 February 2016). Schubert's 'Trout' Quintet, which ended the evening, is the most familiar work scored for this combination, but there's also Vaughan Williams' C minor Piano Quintet, one of the chamber works he composed relatively early in his career, but were then side-lined, and have only recently been brought out of hibernation.
It is not typical of the mature composer, with strong echoes of Brahms and Fauré, in particular. All the same, every now and then the Vaughan Williams we know seems to be only just round the corner...
