On Sibelius growing like a fungus,

We'd never had quite such a dismayed reaction to sight-reading a symphony. A huddle of violins, flutes and trombones at the interval were all urgently wanting to know the same thing: how could they vote, for next season, so that they could ensure that never again would the Bromley Symphony Orchestra play a Sibelius symphony????
I didn't agree with them, but I wasn't amazed that they felt that way. Sibelius' fourth is that kind of a piece...
