Edward Loder (1809-65) was one of those composers who had the misfortune to live during a time when the British upper classes looked abroad for their music. In spite of an attempted English Musical Renaissance during the late Victorian era, it is only recently that early Victorian composers such as Balfe, Wallace, Macfarren and Sterndale Bennett started receiving their due. To this list one can safely add Edward Loder, whose music is at present undergoing a much awaited revival. Edward's ancestors were an eminent musical family dating back to late Georgian Bath, so it is no surprise that he was attracted to music from a very early age...
