Together with Georg Friedrich Handel (1685-1759), Dr Maurice Greene (1696-1755) was one of the most outstanding figures in eighteenth century musical England. Yet today his is an obscure name, and his instrumental pieces are hardly performed. Why is this? Born into a well-to-do family, Greene had been appointed to every major musical post in England before he was forty, including such prestigious positions as organist and composer of the Chapel Royal in 1727, and Master of the King's Music in 1735...
