A rapid and vital transformation in musical tastes occurred in the years around 1500 with the widespread distribution of part-music in the new medium of print, and the creation of novel instrumental sounds such as that of the viol. Very soon, many musicians took to this new instrument with huge eagerness, and almost overnight groups were formed to promote this new musical dimension. History now refers to these groups as 'consorts of viols'...
