I'm always pleased to listen to music from France's prolific, listener-friendly composer Camille Saint-Saëns;: the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, the Third Symphony, Danse Macabre, the 2nd Piano Concerto and Carnival of the Animals are all winning compositions.
The two piano trios, composed in 1863 and 1892, stand at the zenith of his neglected chamber music output, and their place in a genre the composer held dear is reflected in their quality.
Three decades separate the composition of the two trios, the first, harmonious and outgoing; the second, deep and reflective, betraying years of experience. Their contrasted character requires a dissimilar approach while retaining the utmost virtuosity...
