MARIA NOCKIN describes the best 'Salome'
she's seen in a decade
After the premiere of Richard Strauss' Salome, Kaiser Wilhelm said the composer would do himself terrible damage with the piece. Later, Strauss commented that as a result of the damage he built a luxurious villa in Garmisch! Santa Fe Opera's 2015 production of Salome, which this reporter saw on 31 July, made use of the full orchestration and boasted a cast of singers whose powerful and musically colorful voices soared above it...
