Psappha at the Buxton Festival, reviewed by MIKE WHEELER
Manchester's new music ensemble Psappha has made several distinguished appearances at the Buxton Festival over the years. On this occasion we heard solid string sextet repertoire from Brahms and Schoenberg, with John Adams supplying the wild card (St John's Church, Buxton, UK, 25 July 2015).
Brahms' B flat Sextet typifies his liking for rich, dark sonorities, not least in the opening trio for viola and both cellos. Psappha's steady tempo helped to keep textures clear, though tuttis tended at first to sound bottom-heavy...
