It was with Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor that the Buxton Festival began in 1979, but there's no sense of a conscious nod to Festival history in Stephen Unwin's new production.
The forced marriage that is the plot's main driver transfers readily enough to Unwin's chosen period, late 1940s Italy, without taking the well-trodden mafia route. So in the first scene Normanno's huntsmen burst onto the scene straight off the set of an Italian neo-realist film of the period...
