When the late Trevor Hold (1939-2004), English composer, poet, M&V contributor and friend of editor Basil Ramsey, wrote his tongue-in-cheek series 'Rejected Reviews, or works that got away', each article, almost without exception, was about an imaginary piece or pieces which the composer in question would have been very unlikely to write. For some reason, this reminds me of the title of this CD, Sofia Gubaidulina Complete Guitar Works. In fact there are only two short Gubaidulina pieces for solo guitar — the solo guitar medium has so far only drawn about six minutes of music from this great and uncompromising Russian composer (born 1931 in Chistopol). The first of these, the early Serenade (1960), easy to play, approachable, in a recognisable idiom, and described by Gubaidulina as 'music for pleasure', was published in 1971...
