Spanish and Catalan music from Maria Camahort and friends, heard by MIKE WHEELER
One of the most fascinating musical growth areas in recent years has been the exploration of the overlap between the worlds of early music and traditional music of various kinds, and the increasing tendency of folk musicians to reclaim classical arrangements of folk tunes. The Buxton Festival concert by Spanish guitarist Maria Camahort and her colleagues — Violeta García, voice and violin, Laura Ruhi Vidal, soprano, Sergio Serra, cello, and Pablo Dominguez, percussion and guitar — (St John's Church, Buxton, UK, 13 July 2015) was a fascinating programme of Spanish and Catalan music — traditional songs, together with arrangements by Mompou, Lorca and Falla re-created in folk style.
In the group's arrangement of Mompou's Song and Dance No 7, for piano, they re-introduced the words of the original, and all three women were singing by the end, to haunting effect...
