The best jazz often has many of the elements that attract classical listeners: emotional depth, satisfying melodies, structure, complex rhythms, varied colors, and virtuosity. Jazz has even gone through an accelerated version of classical music's audience alienation--alienation caused by a similar abandonment of music readily enjoyed by those without a music degree. Research by Ovum's news service Music & Copyright found that global dollar sales of recorded jazz (including downloads) fell by 10.1% in 2013, the largest drop of any genre for the second straight year.
