The international fame of Danish master Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) is based mainly on his symphonic works, particularly his six symphonies. Born in the same year as Sibelius, it was the latter's reputation that took flight with conductors and critics alike, and the Finn's stock was greatly admired particularly through such 'hits' as Finlandia and Valse Triste. Nielsen's music is bereft of such popular pieces, but all the same his compositions contain many attractive features and innovative surprises...
