Back in the antediluvian 1990s, the Emerson Quartet's polished realizations of the Shostakovich quartets on Deutsche Grammophon set a new standard for their performance. After them, it's been hard not to hear other ensembles as either following their example or conspicuously flouting it.
The Carducci String Quartet's performances are in the Emerson mould, but by no means are they slavish imitations. These players place a bit more emphasis on sheer tonal beauty than did the Emersons...
