Offenbach's 'The Tales of Hoffmann', live in HD from New York, impresses MARIA NOCKIN
In 1851 Jules Barbier and Michel Carré produced a play called Les contes fantastiques d'Hoffmann ('The Fantastic Tales of Hoffmann') at the Odéon Theatre in Paris. Composer Jacques Offenbach saw it during its Paris run, but was busy with a trip to America immediately afterwards. When Offenbach returned to France, he learned that Hector Salomon was attempting to set Les Contes Fantastiques to music for performance at the Opéra. Salomon soon relinquished it and Offenbach worked on it from time to time until his death in 1880...
