I have to confess that in the Beethoven trio I did not get as far as the 'ghost' movement. The opening tempo indications certainly suggest briskness, but nothing could reconcile me to the ruthlessness with which this Czech Petrof team launches the work.Nadezhda von Meck, the devoted patroness who kept Tchaikovsky financially above water on condition they never met, was insistent for a piano trio. In fact they managed to glance each other through a window, and on one occasion Tchaikovsky even had to raise his hat to her...
