Balázs Kovalik's new production of 'Die Frau Ohne Schatten' at Opera Leipzig fascinates RODERIC DUNNETT
Opera Leipzig has long been one of Germany's most creative, enterprising opera companies. A permanent Stadttheater was established in 1817, soon after Napoleon's defeat at the famous Völkerschlacht or Battle of the Nations of 1813; Marschner were among the early entrepreneur-directors, and more importantly, after the Neues Theater was established in 1865-7, Nikisch and Mahler. The present new building opened in 1960 on the same site, following wartime destruction.
Like other easterly venues — Dresden, East Berlin, Magdeburg, Schwerin — it flourished relatively with support from the former DDR government...
