Since the very beginning of the Church two thousand years ago, Christians have always observed the time of Our Lord's Passion, Death and Resurrection with the utmost devotion. At first, Lent was observed by those preparing for Baptism and by those who were to be re-united to the Church's community from which they had been separated by sin, but in the course of time the Church came to recognize that by careful keeping of these days, the whole community could be inspired to genuine repentance and ask for forgiveness, thus benefitting from the Gospel's message to the full. As the forty-day Lenten Season reached the great climax of Holy Week, the liturgies became more focused on the Paschal Mystery of the Crucified and Risen Lord, and devotions such as Stations of the Cross became, at least in the Western Church, a means of reflection, meditation and recalling of the great Eastertide mysteries...
