Ensemble

High Fives

MIKE WHEELER listens to Canada's
National Arts Centre Orchestra and to
the NAC Wind Quintet

There was a delightful moment in the finale of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, when conductor Pinchas Zuckerman turned to give the double bass section of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Canada some extra encouragement, and one of them grinned back. That and the high fives he exchanged with some of the violinists as he walked off stage at the end [Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham UK, 25 October 2014] spoke volumes about the rapport he clearly enjoys with his players.

The Ottowa-based orchestra is currently on a tour of the UK, finishing in Salisbury Cathedral on the 29th and the Colston Hall, Bristol on 30 October 2014.

They brought a rich but transparent string sound to a deeply-felt reading of Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis...
