Ernő Dohnányi was another of those twentieth century revivalists of the Romantic Age who continued to produce lush, melodic opuses long after they had gone out of style. He remained musically conservative, avoiding tonal and stylistic techniques.
This symphony's first movement was written in a village setting close to Budapest in July 1944. His second and third movements followed in Vienna in Spring 1945, away from air raids...
