SHARPLY FOCUSED
John Scott at the organ of Derby Cathedral delights MIKE WHEELER
John Scott, Organist and Director of Music at St Thomas', Fifth Avenue, New York, has been on a European tour, which ended with an outstanding recital in Derby Cathedral (Derby, UK, 6 August, 2014).
He opened with a bold, forthright account of Buxtehude's Praeludium in C, BuxWV 137, grabbing our attention with the rhetorical opening pedal solo, moving into a second section that positively skipped along, and from there into an alert fugue.
Everything throughout the evening, in fact, was sharply focused, from the delightfully crystal-clear textures in J S Bach's 'Trio on Allein Gott in der Höh sei Her', BWV 664, to the feather-light opening of Marco Enrico Bossi's Scherzo...
