I would much rather be dealing with such characters as Beauty, Pleasure, and above all Deceit then tedious Jewish 'heroes' of past and present. Handel's last oratorio has not had a good press on the whole, and nobody quite knows how much work on it the virtually blind composer was able to do. But its framework goes back to 1707 and setting of an Italian text by Cardinal Pamphili. Handel revived and expanded this for London in 1737, though still in Italian...
