The fact that well over half these thirteen tracks turn out to be arrangements is something of a disappointment. The Violin Concerto bewitched me years ago, and of course the manner here is often similar, notably in the stage music. Throughout his composing career, Khachaturian remained loyal to his Armenian folk background, and doubtless he deserved also to be hailed in 1973 as a Hero of Socialist Labour. Long before that, in his earliest twenties, when mainly a cellist and busy with biology, he could produce characteristic chamber pieces; hence this admirable violin Dance of 1925...
