Marin Marais (1656-1728) is undoubtedly one of France's musical glories of the baroque era. A pupil of Sainte-Colombe, he first made a name for himself as a bass viol player, but his immense talents were soon spotted, and he quickly found a place in the Opera Orchestra and in the prestigious 'Musique du Roi'. Almost immediately, Lully took him under his wing, and with such a mentor spurning him on, Marais was soon composing his own operas...
