MIKE WHEELER listens to
Andrew Dunlop and the Eblana String Trio

 

The Eblana String Trio made a welcome return to Derby Chamber Music, this time with pianist Andrew Dunlop for a programme that included a world premiere (Multi-Faith Centre, Derby University, Derby, UK, 11 April 2014).

But it was with one of Beethoven's string trios — Op 9 No 3 in C minor — that they started. It's always fascinating to hear the young Beethoven finding his own way around the Viennese classical style, and the players were with him every step of the way, from the restlessness of the opening movement, through the switches between strenuousness and calm in the second, to the sinewy energy of the finale...
