Johann Sebastian's visit to Frederick the Great in 1747 produced The Musical Offering; it may also have provided opportunity for discussion with his son about the possibility of an eventual move to Leipzig. Added urgency was provided by a very public audition in June 1749 of the strongly supported Gottlob Harrer, who eventually succeeded Johann Sebastian. So much for him. Certainly Carl Philipp Emanuel completed this outstanding Magnificat in late August 1749, and it is more than probable that its first performance was in his father's church of St Thomas, Leipzig in the early months of the year his father died...
