MIKE WHEELER was at Opera North's Verdi Macbeth
Tim Albery's 2008 production for Opera North of Verdi's Macbeth has had a welcome revival (Theatre Royal, Nottingham, UK, 18 March 2014).
As the programme points out, Verdi saw the Witches collectively as the third main character, and here they are very much at the centre of the action. They see, hear and arrange everything, from attending Lady Macbeth in her miscarriage during the overture and delivering Mrs Banquo of her line of future kings, to bringing Macbeth the pen and paper to write his letter to Lady Macbeth in Act 1, and a cup of tea, with a little extra something to conjure up the vision of the line of kings, in Act 3...
