RODERIC DUNNETT marvels at Henze's Boulevard Solitude
Welsh National Opera, under David Pountney's artistic leadership, has in recent seasons been mounting and touring a series of operas with an interrelated theme or content. Last autumn they focused on 'The Tudors', exploring three well-known operas by Donizetti covering the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. In summer 2014 they have dubbed their forthcoming pairing of Nabucco and Moses and Aaron 'Faith'.
The current sequence, 'Fallen Women', includes La traviata, and more importantly — in that it is far less often staged in the UK — Manon Lescaut, Puccini's third opera (after Le Villi and Edgar) and first major success...
