Messiaen's music poses a conundrum to any performer who wishes to convey the aesthetic principles at its heart. Vingt Regards sur L'Enfant-Jésus is no exception. On the one hand, the work intentionally betrays any traditional sense of meter; we cannot easily find a pulse, let alone place the music into a hierarchy of strong and weak beats. On the other hand, our very nature drives us to find a unit of measure — some periodic pumping of a musical heart to guide our journey through the composer's web of thick chords and highly complex melodic strands...
