The destruction of Troy haunted both the ancient and mediaeval worlds. If Aeneas fled the flaming city with his father on his back only to cause havoc in Carthage, the gods insisted he should persevere towards the foundation of Rome. But that was not the end of the story. A tradition persisted at least until the time of Caxton that a grandson of Aeneas called Brutus had wandered even further to take control of England...
