Prokofiev's Symphony No 4, one of his finest symphonic achievements, has an interesting history. Indeed, the version recorded here took eighteen years to gestate. The composer started writing it in 1929, where the material was largely derived from the ballet The Prodigal Son, which incidentally also forms part of the programme on this album...
