Opera North's Britten celebrations, with MIKE WHEELER
Opera North's Britten celebrations afforded a welcome chance to re-visit their outstanding productions of A midsummer night's dream and Peter Grimes, as well as presenting their first staging of Death in Venice.
It was a delight to return to designer Johan Engels' semi-transparent silver-grey Athenian wood, whose screens and drop-curtain both hide and reveal the fairy shenanigans that tangle, then resolve, the relationships of A midsummer night's dream (Theatre Royal, Nottingham, UK, 19 November 2013). Again the balloon-clouds hovered overhead, re-configuring their circle as the action moves from one scene to the next, and again Bruno Poet's brilliantly conceived lighting added colour after colour as the various enchantments took hold...
