Exploring the Darker Side
Dan Miller and Richard Hodges at Derby's Festival of Britten, reviewed by MIKE WHEELER
Following an introductory study day on the composer, the first performance event of Derby's Festival of Britten was a song recital by bass-baritone Dan Miller and pianist Richard Hodges (The VoiceBox, Derby, UK, 3 November 2013). Entitled 'Benjamin Britten and his influences: his loves and hates' it surrounded him with other composers -- Schubert and Purcell of course, but also Wolf, Schoenberg, Berg, Bridge and Poulenc.
But they started, provocatively, with Brahms, to whom Britten was famously antipathetic...
