A Lesson to be Learned

The Cleveland Orchestra welcomes back
its music director Franz Welser-Möst,

This concert [26 October 2013, Severance Hall, Cleveland, Ohio, USA] was the last in a series of three which paired Beethoven symphonies with those of Shostakovich and which heralded the return of the orchestra's maestro, Franz Welser-Möst for the 2103-2014 season. Severance Hall was packed from the main floor to the top of the balcony and the audience was richly rewarded for their enthusiasm.

Conductors tend to squabble over how to play the first eight notes, and Maestro Welser-Möst launched directly into the Allegro, choosing to go with the and-two-and-one rather than the more common one-two-three-four for the Fate motif. As the movements progressed through the Andante con moto and the Scherzo the themes passed from the strings through the low brass and woodwinds...
