The new concert season at Derby's Assembly Rooms (Derby, UK, 10 October 2013), got underway with a return visit from the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, Moscow, with conductor Nikolay Vinokurov.
Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence was a refreshingly unusual choice of opener, and while I prefer it in its original string sextet form, it's always a pleasure to hear. This performance was at its most effective in the two central movements -- warmly lyrical in the serenade-like second, the only part of the work that has any kind of Italianate feel, and dance-like in the third, with the central trepak really taking flight...
