Three English oboe concertos make this CD a particularly valuable contribution to the catalogue.
John Joubert, still working vigorously into his eighty-seventh year, wrote his concerto for oboe and strings for Jinny Shaw and the Orchestra of the Swan in 2006, and they gave its first performance the following summer. The first two movements allow very little relaxation, moving as they do with lively and surprisingly youthful optimism. Leighton died in 1988, and this concerto, written in 1953, was not heard until it was included in the 2001 Hereford Three Choirs Festival programmes...
