Mendelssohn's music is often associated with youth, exuberance, and a particular brand of unrivaled liveliness. Whether or not this distinct character is a product of the work itself is debatable, but nevertheless, performers throughout the ages have made such unbridled vigor an indelible aspect of the composer's style.
Several recordings have been made of the complete cello works, many of which are high-spirited interpretations that represent Mendelssohn as a Mozartian disciple, albeit with an unprecedented joie de vivre -- pleasant but shallow.
