Arrigo Boito's Mefistofele at San Francisco Opera,
heard by MARIA NOCKIN

 

Based on Goethe's Faust, La Scala in Milan premiered Arrigo Boito's opera Mefistofele in 1868 with the composer conducting. Since audiences were not happy with it, Boito withdrew it for major revisions, one of which was changing Faust from a baritone to a tenor. When staged in Bologna in 1875 it was a success, but the composer continued to make small changes before each succeeding performance. Both London and Boston audiences first saw the opera in 1880...
