Russian composer Lera Auerbach's new recording of original works for cello and piano offers listeners an endless palette of original and provocative musical ideas. From a stylistic standpoint, Auerbach's music is accessible to a general audience, but not so familiar as to harp on tired ideas. This balance between tradition and novelty is one of the album's most attractive qualities.
From Bachian compound lines (Preludes in D major and G-flat major, tracks 5 and 13), to spirited Mendelssohnian bursts of energy (Prelude in A major, track 7), to stark and relentless Shostakovichian ostinati (Preludes in B major and D minor, tracks 11 and 24), the preludes channel voices from the past and mould them into a modern kaleidoscopic array of sonic beauty...
