I first became aware of the music of Belgian composer Jan van der Roost on another Navona CD, Sculpting the Air (NV5852). His aphoristic Chemical Suite for trombone quartet stood out on that disc for its wit, invention, and clever handling of the instruments, all within a modern but listenable style. So it was with curiosity and interest that I approached a disc of his orchestral music.
'Filmic' was the first word that entered my head on listening to Sirius, an overture originally written for an ad hoc orchestra of young music students and their professional tutors...
