Karen A Tarlow was formerly a member of the music faculty of the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is a prolific composer predominantly of choral music. The short orchestral piece presented here, Kavanah (Remembrance), was written in 1995 and is sub-titled 'Quasi-Quodlibet', the melodies superimposed on the background being reminiscent of a Klezmer style, one of which is a traditional Yiddish song. Knowing the St Petersburg orchestra would play the piece induced the 'remembrance' of its title, though the appearance of the Dies irae is interesting.
