TONY WESTERMAN is impressed by the organ playing of Tom Corfield
Tom Corfield's recitals always attract a large audience in Derby Cathedral and the recital on Wednesday 14 August 2013 was no exception. People are drawn each year by his meticulous attention to detail, always supported by superb musicianship, and by his ability to understand and present musical structures in an intelligent and appealing manner.
Benjamin Britten's only work for organ, Prelude and Fugue on a Theme of Vittoria, opened the recital. The work was commissioned in 1946 by Walter Hussey whilst he was at St Matthew's, Northampton, and is based on a fluid melodic fragment which appears in the pedals under stark and uncompromising chords...
