Organist David Pipe at Derby Cathedral, heard by MIKE WHEELER
David Pipe, assistant Director of Music at York Minster, included two transcriptions of baroque music by the nineteenth-century organ virtuoso W T Best (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 10 July 2013). Best undoubtedly did a lot of good work bringing this music to new audiences, but his transcriptions, on this evidence, sound anachronistic today. Without knowing how much leeway he gave his players regarding registration, the opening and close of the overture to Handel's Occasional Oratorio, while full of Handelian pomp, lacked clarity; textures in the fugal allegro, on the other hand, were beautifully lucid...
