The Allegri String Quartet's performance of Beethoven's Op 18 is unique, to say the least. Much to the contrary of our historical perception of Beethoven the man, the quartet's approach to his music is quite delicate. To most of those acquainted with the composer's brawny first essays in the genre, such a description could be nothing other than pejorative in nature. Somehow, though, the Allegri's light touch works...
