Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto is one of the great blockbusters of the repertoire, but this was a performance that impressed as much by its sensitivity as by whipping up a virtuoso storm (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 2 May 2013). Soloist Alexander Romanovsky produced the singing tone Rachmaninov said he was after in the opening theme, before proving himself more than equal to the sheer barrage of notes Rachmaninov throws at him. Not the least of these came in the mind-boggling first movement cadenza, which Romanovsky played in the first, longer and more taxing, of the composer's two versions...
