It is no secret that ballet companies in the United States constantly struggle to make ends meet. My experience as a ballet board member shows that the realities of budgeting often present a compelling case to eliminate live music. The argument goes like this: With the stroke of a pen a large expense item is removed and neither dancers nor staff need to be let go. Plus, there is no need to scrimp on sets or costumes, because after all, recorded music will be just fine...
